People Matter IW have developed a new Independent Living Centre at Units 1 & 2 Bernard Way which is near the Post Office depot on the Riverway Estate in Newport.
The aim of the centre is to enable people who require support for daily living to access support and advice to help them. The centre provides information and assistance to island residents who would welcome help to continue living in their own home. The Independent Living Centre offers a free and impartial service to Island residents who are looking for equipment and advice to enhance their independence.
People who require support are assessed to see which aids and adaptations might meet their needs. They are able to try out a range of different equipment to help them to decide what is best for them. The centre has areas set up as the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom to enable people to try out aids and adaptations in a more realistic setting. The aim of the service is to enable people to try before they buy.
The Independent Living Centre has a wide range of resources that go beyond the scope of aids and adaptations, and therefore can offer people advice on many aspects of daily living.
The centre is staffed by the Independent Living Centre Managers and Co-ordinators. We work in partnership with the Occupational Therapy service from the IW NHS, and we host 2 occupational therapy assistant clincs a week. We also host the Blue Badge assessment clinics on a Tuesday and Thursday each week.
We also have a mobile Independent Living Centre which regularly attends community workshops and events.
